About the School: A Brief History / Overview

School of Tamil and Cultural Studies was established According to Resolution 10.3 of the 10th Syndicate Meeting of the Tamil Nadu Open University held on 06.05.2006, with the approval of His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

Creating and presenting art curricula and curricula with the help of modern technologies to explain the Tamil language, literature, grammar and cultural resources to future generations. The primary objective of the field is to guide the younger generation through activities such as encouraging young researchers to assist in the study of Tamil, implementing Tamil-based research projects, and providing Tamil-based courses online.

The institutional founder of the School is Dr. S.Balasubramanian and Dr. M. Vaiyapuri has been working as the first assistant professor since then. In 2014, Dr. S.Aranganathan was appointed their assistant professor.

Since 2003 when the university was founded. B.A. Tamil, M.A. Tamil courses were offered. Then from 2005 B.Litt. Tamil, 2007 B.A. Functional Tamil, Diploma in Media Arts, Post graduate Diploma in Tamil Research Methodology in 2008 and Diploma in Theatre Arts in 2017 were introduced. Full-time and part-time in M.Phil., and doctoral research Programmes have been offered since 2013-2014. Curricula are to be modified for all courses offered by the School of Tamil and Cultural Studies from the 2020 calendar year and courses are to be offered with new syllabi.

The School Collaboration with Central Institute of Indian Languages – Mysore, Sahitya Akademi – New Delhi, Central Institute of Classical Tamil – Chennai, Tamil University – Thanjavur, National Book Trust of India, International Institute of Tamil Studies – Chennai, including various institutions are implementing educational programs.


  • To offer Programmes through the state of the art technology for higher research studies in Language, Arts and Culture in tune with the society’s requirement
  • To undertake Training and Research at the international standard with widespread knowledge and depth and make the outputs easily available.
  • To produce creative writers who will enrich Language, Arts and Culture with their contributions.


  • To showcase the rich cultural heritage of Tamil through native Arts, Culture and Literature, infusing them with modern technologies.


  • To Plan, develop and implement academic programmes at the degree, diploma and certificate level.
  • Doing Research leading to Ph.D. and M.Phil.
  • Preparation of Electronic Course Materials.
  • Organizing Seminars, Workshops and Symposia periodically for Academic Counsellors for updating knowledge.
  • Conduct training programmes to develop Tamil language skills and culture related activities.
  • To facilitate printing and re-printing of learning materials.
  • Providing Student Support Services
