About Us

About the School

The School of Special Education and Rehabilitation (SOSER) was established with the approval of the Academic Council and the Syndicate of the University in 2009. The prime function of the School is to undertake academic, training, research, and extension activities for promoting education and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. The Tamil Nadu Open University, the first University in the State of Tamil Nadu, to offer B.Ed. Special Education through Distance Mode since 2008 and the first State Open University offered M.Ed. in Special Education through Distance Mode during 2015 – 2016. The Special Education programmes with the specializations of Hearing Impairment (HI), Intellectual Disability (ID) and Visual Impairment (VI) offered by SOSER are approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu, University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi and the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi.


To provide studies and training programmes, and promote research and extension services through innovative techniques, methods and approaches on various fields of disability for human resource development to cater to the needs of education and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in order to make them contributing members of the society.

  • To integrate ICTs in SLM.
  • To foster research mind among the learners.
  • To produce committed, competent, creative, and compassionate Special Educators.


  • To launch various programmes related to Special Education and Rehabilitation through distance mode.
  • To provide support service for the persons with disabilities for their education and rehabilitation.
  • To conduct seminars, workshops and conferences on disabilities related to education, teaching-learning, research, etc.
