What is Open Learning?

Open learning refers to ‘openness’ in education. You can take the education that you want, at your pace and wherever it is needed. You are not bound to attend regular classes. There is no upper age limit for a student. There is flexibility in course combinations.

Does Distance Education have the same status as conventional education?

Yes. Distance Education is the accepted mode adopted by a number of Universities the world over. Almost all these universities use the conventional mode too.

Is the TNOU a recognised university?

Yes. The Tamil Nadu Open University (TNOU) was established by an Act (Act No.27) of the Legislative Assembly of the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2002.The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given recognition to the TNOU under Sec.12-B of the UGC Act, 1956.

Is the TNOU student(Formal Stream) eligible for UPSC examinations?

Yes, because TNOU is a recognized university established by the Govt. of Tamilnadu.

Are the TNOU degrees, diplomas and certificates recognised for Government Jobs?

Yes (if it is 10+2 for Degree for state Government jobs and promotions. For Central Government jobs and promotions, the 10 + 2 pattern for a degree is not mandatory)

Is it necessary for me to visits the Headquarter at Saidapet, Chennai for studying?

Not necessary. You could study sitting at home or wherever you find it convenient to study. However, there are certain programmes, for which practical sessions or similar activities are compulsory, for which you will have to attend the Learner Support Centres established at across the state. You can select one which is near you.

Where are the Regional Centres of the University located?

The Regional Centres are located in the following districts in Tamil Nadu: i.Chennai, ii.Dharmapuri, iii.Madurai, iv.Tirchy, v.Coimbatore, vi.Villupuram, vii. Niligris and viii.Tirunelveli

Does the University provide study material?

Yes, TNOU provides study material in Self Learning format to the students for all its Programmes. The cost of this is included in the Programme Fees.

From where can I receive the study material?

Generally, from the Learner Support Centre you have selected. The Study Centre distributes the study material after confirmation of the student’s admission.

What are the academic programmes and courses offered by the TNOU?

There are a number of programmes on offer right from the Certificate level up to the Doctoral level. These programmes are run by the different Schools of the University. You may check the list of programmes offering by TNOU from the website.

Is there any age restriction in joining courses offered by Open University?

No. There is no age restriction for admission provided the minimum qualification required for admission is fulfilled. The other name of distance education is life-long learning. So, there is no age bar or age restriction for admission. There are instances where learners across generations join Open University. But minimum age limit shall be 21 years completed for non-formal stream admission.

I have not passed my SSLC or HSC. What Courses can I take at TNOU?

TNOU is the only university that has been permitted by the Govt of Tamil Nadu to offer TNOU programmes under non-formal stream. Those candidates who have not successfully completed the HSC or equivalent examination but have completed 18 years of age may be admitted to UG programme and Diploma Programmes as offered by concerned programmes listed by TNOU for which you have to attend and complete TNOU bridge courses (BPP).

How can I take admission in courses offered by the University?

Admission process will be round the year. The admission activities of the University are carried out in two academic cycles viz

i) Calendar Year – from January to December and
ii) Academic Year – from July to June.

Online admission portal is available on the University website: www.tnou.ac.in . Students are required to pay Programme fee through the online payment gateway (credit card/debit card) and through NEFT/RTGS.

How do I register myself with the TNOU?

You can register yourself in the online portal of our Website or contact the nearby Learning Support Centre Coordinator/Regional Centres of TNOU for assistance.

What is the online admission procedure?

With producing necessary documents and verified by the concerned staff of Regional Centres and Learner Support Centre, if your are eligible to admit the desired programme, you have to pay the programme fees in online mode and register you admission on the same for which Regional Centres and Learner Support Centre will facilitate you for admission. Who is the right authority to contact in case of queries?

The first time of contact is the Learner Support Centre. You can also seek the help of the coordinating respective Regional Centres of TNOU. Still, if you are not satisfied you could write/email/phone, etc., at the address given in the Website. Depending on the nature of help, different sections will attend to your query.

How much time will I need to devote to my course each week?

A general rule of thumb is that you should expect to spend 6 to 12 hours a week, per Course, in order to study the material and prepare for assignments etc,. Though learning styles differ, you must concentrate on study routine and schedule early so as to successfully complete your Programme.

Is attendance mandatory for counselling session?

Except practical oriented sessions, the attendance is not mandatory. You are advised to attend counselling sessions. The learning outcome will be assessed through your regular attendance in counselling. Theory counselling is not compulsory though strongly recommended. Please note that practical sessions, hands-on training, workshops, seminars, project report writing and field visits, wherever prescribed, are compulsory

Is there any provision for change of study centre?

Change of Study Centre is allowed provided the programme in which you have taken admission is activated in the new centre. You are required to submit your request for change of Study Centre through e-mail to tnousssd @gmail.com. You will be communicated through mail after change is made effective. This will also be reflected on the TNOU website.

Can I enrol for two degree programmes simultaneously in the TNOU University?

No. This is not permitted, as per the UGC guidelines.
